Bees manufacture Propolis from plant resins and use it to keep their hives free of microbes, propolis is rapidly acquiring recognition as a natural product with great potential for human healing and health. Its antiseptic properties were known to the Greeks with Hippocrates being an advocate of the resin, but only recently have scientific studies shown that it could be of help in treating a wide range of conditions.
Worldwide research has shown that;
Bee Propolis is useful in the alleviation of joint & muscular pain, arthritis & rheumatism, skin complaints such as eczema & psoriasis and the repiratory problems asthma & bronchitis.
Bee Propolis as a natural healing agent for wounds and burns, works as well if not better than orthdox manufactured drugs and as a stimulant for the immune system.
Research at the Institute for Applied Biosciences, Ben-Gurion University shows that Propolis acts on the cyotkine intracellular messaging system to increase immune activity, and is now believed to be better than conventional anti-virals in controlling the Herpes Virus.
Most importantly, propolis contains powerful antibacterial properties which are capable of destroying strains that have become resistant to conventional antibiotics and may in future be used in their stead.
Bees produce Propolis from a sticky resin that seeps from the buds of some trees and oozes from the bark of other trees, chiefly conifers (pines), they us it to line the interior of brood cells in preparation for the queen’s laying of eggs, this propolis lining insures an almost sterile environment for the brood.
Propolis is a very complex compound and its chemical elements vary according to its source. A broad analysis reveals approximately 55 percent resinous compounds and balsam, 30 percent beeswax, 10 percent ethereal and aromatic oils, and 5 percent bee pollen. Bioflavonols are the key contributors to propolis’ properties, components include cinnamic acid, cinnamyl alcohol, vanillin, caffeic acid, galangin, tetochrysin, pinocembrin, isalpinin, chrysin and ferulic acid, offering antiseptic, antibiotic, antibacterial, antifungal, and even antiviral properties.
